A 5-min Wikidata Query Service tutorial

Wikidata Query Service(WDQS) is a software package and public service designed to provide aSPARQLendpoint which allows you to query against theWikidatadata set.

Please note that the service is currently inbetamode, which means that details of the data set or the service provided can change without prior warning.

This page or other relevant documentation pages will be updated accordingly; it is recommended that you watch them if you are using the service.

You can see examples of the SPARQL Queries on theSPARQL examples page.

The Wikidata Query Service operates on a data set from , represented in RDF as described in theRDF dump formatdocumentation.

The services data set does not exactly match the data set produced by RDF dumps, mainly for performance reasons; the documentation describes a small set of differences.

You can download a weekly dump of the same data from:

spo or subject, predicate, object is known as atriple, or commonly referred to in Wikidata as astatementabout data.

The statement The United States capital is Washington DC consists of the subject United States (Q30), the predicate capital is (P36), and an object Washington DC (Q61). This statement can be represented as three URIs:

Thanks to the prefixes (see below), the same statement can be written in a more concise form. Note the dot at the end to represent the end of the statement.

The/entity/(wd:) represents Wikidata entity (Q-number values). The/prop/direct/(wdt:) is a truthy property a value we would expect most often when looking at the statement. The truthy properties are needed because some statements could be true-er than others. For example, the statement The capital of U.S. is New York City is also true but only if you look at the context of U.S. history. WDQS uses rank to determine which statements should be used as truthy.

In addition to the truthy statements, WDQS stores all statements (both truthy and not), but they dont use the samewdt:prefix.U.S. capitalhave three values: DC, Philadelphia, and New York. And each of these values have qualifiers – additional information, such as start and end dates, that narrows down the scope of each statement. To store this information in the triplestore, WDQS introduces an auto-magical statement subject, which is essentially a random number:

US indirect capital is X

The Xs real capital value is Washington DC

The Xs start date is 1800-11-17

SeeSPARQL tutorial – qualifiersfor more information.

spo is also used as a form of basic syntax layout for queryingRDFdata structures, or any graph database or triplestore, such as the Wikidata Query Service (WDQS), which is powered by Blazegraph, a high performance graph database.

Advanced uses of a triple (spo) even including using triples as objects or subjects of other triples!

The subjects and predicates (first and second values of the triple) must always be stored asURI. For example, if the subject isUniverse (Q1), it will be stored as. Prefixes allow us to write that long URI in a shorter form:wd:Q1. Unlike subjects and predicates, the object (triples third value) can be either a URI or a literal, e.g. a number or a string.

WDQS understands many shortcut abbreviations, known as prefixes. Some are internal to Wikidata, e.g.wd, wdt, p, ps, bd, and many others are commonly used external prefixes, likerdf, skos, owl, schema.

In the following query, we are asking for items where there is a statement of P279 = Q7725634 or in fuller terms, selecting subjects that have a predicate of subclass of with an object of = literary work.

The below SELECT query does the following:

Selects all the items(?s subjects) and their descriptions(?desc)

that have(WHERE) the statement(?s subject) has a direct property(wdt:) = P279 subclasses of

with a value of entity(wd:) = Q7725634 Literary Work

and Optionally return the label and description using the Wikidata label service

The service supports the following extensions to standard SPARQL capabilities:

You can fetch the label, alias, or description of entities you query, with language fallback, using the specialized service with the URI The service is very helpful when you want to retrieve labels, as it reduces the complexity of SPARQL queries that you would otherwise need to achieve the same effect.

The service can be used in one of the two modes: manual and automatic.

In automatic mode, you only need to specify the service template, e.g.:

and WDQS will automatically generate labels as follows:

In each case, the variable in?NAMEshould be bound, otherwise the service fails.

You specify your preferred language(s) for the label with one or more ofbd:serviceParam wikibase:languagelanguage-codetriples. Each string can contain one or more language codes, separated by commas. WDQS considers languages in the order in which you specify them. If no label is available in any of the specified languages, the Q-id of the entity (without any prefix) is its label.

The Wikidata Query Service website auto-magically replaces[AUTO_LANGUAGE]with the language code of current users interface. For example, if the users UI is in French, the SPARQLs codebd:serviceParamwikibase:language[AUTO_LANGUAGE],enwill be converted tobd:serviceParamwikibase:languagefr,enbefore being sent to the query service.

Example, showing the list of US presidents and their spouses:

In this example WDQS automatically creates the labels?pLabeland?wLabelfor properties.

In the manual mode, you explicitly bind the label variables within the service call, but WDQS will still provide language resolution and fallback. Example:

This will consider labels and descriptions in French, German and English, and if none are available, will use the Q-id as the label.

The service allows to search for items with coordinates located within certain radius of the center of within certain bounding box.

The first line of thearoundservice call must have format?itempredicate?location, where the result of the search will bind?itemto items within the specified location and?locationto their coordinates. The parameters supported are:

The point around which search is performed. Must be bound for search to work.

Distance from the center. Currently the distance is always in kilometers, other units are not supported yet.

The globe which is being searched. Optional, default itsEarth (wd:Q2).

The variable receiving distance information

Coordinates may be specified directly:

Schools between San Jose, CA and Sacramento, CA

Point(-121.872777777 37.304166666)

Point(-121.486111111 38.575277777)

The first line of theboxservice call must have format?itempredicate?location, where and the result of the search will bind?itemto items within the specified location and?locationto their coordinates. The parameters supported are:

wikibase:cornerSouthWestandwikibase:cornerNorthEastshould be used together, as well aswikibase:cornerWestandwikibase:cornerEast, and can not be mixed. Ifwikibase:cornerWestandwikibase:cornerEastpredicates are used, then the points are assumed to be the coordinates of the diagonal of the box, and the corners are derived accordingly.

The functiongeof:distancereturns distance between two points on Earth, in kilometers. Example usage:

Functionsgeof:globe,geof:latitude&geof:longitudereturn parts of a coordinate – globe URI, latitude and longitude accordingly.

Functionwikibase:decodeUridecodes (i.e. reversespercent-encoding) given URI string. This may be necessary when converting Wikipedia titles (which are encoded) into actual strings. This function is an opposite of SPARQLencode_for_urifunction.

Mostprefixesthat are used in common queries are supported by the engine without the need to explicitly specify them.

The service supports date values of typexsd:dateTimein the range of about 290B years in the past and in the future, with one-second resolution. WDQS stores dates as the 64-bit number of seconds since the Unix epoch.

Blazegraphplatform on top of which WDQS is implemented has its own set of SPARQL extension. Among them several graph traversal algorithms which aredocumented on Blazegraph Wiki, including BFS, shortest path, CC and PageRank implementations.

Please also refer to the Blazegraphdocumentation on query hintsfor information about how to control query execution and various aspects of the engine.

We allowSPARQL Federated Queriesto call out to a selected number of external databases. Please seethe full list of federated endpointson the dedicated page.

Please note that the databases that the federated endpoints serve use ontologies that may be very different from the Wikidata one. Please refer to theowner documentation linksto learn about the ontologies and data access to these databases.

Please see full description onMediawiki API Service documentation page.

Mediawiki API Service allows to call out to Mediawiki API from SPARQL, and receive the results from inside the SPARQL query. Example (finding category members):

Wikimedia runs the public service instance of WDQS, which is available for use at

The runtime of the query on the public endpoint is limited to 60 seconds. That is true both for the GUI and the public SPARQL endpoint. If you need to run longer queries, please contact theDiscovery team.

The GUI at the home page of you to edit and submit SPARQL queries to the query engine. The results are displayed as an HTML table. Note that every query has a unique URL which can be bookmarked for later use. Going to this URL will put the query in the edit window, but willnotrun it – you still have to click Execute for that.

One can also generate a short URL for the query via a URL shortening service by clicking the Generate short URL link on the right – this will produce the shortened URL for the current query.

The Add prefixes button generates the header containing standard prefixes for SPARQL queries. The full list of prefixes that can be useful is listed in theRDF format documentation. Note that most common prefixes work automatically, since WDQS supports them out of the box.

The GUI also features a simple entity explorer which can be activated by clicking on the 🔍 symbol next to the entity result. Clicking on the entity Q-id itself will take you to the entity page on wikidata.org.

If you run the query in the WDQS GUI, you can choose which view to present by specifying a comment:defaultView:viewNameat the beginning of the query.

SPARQL queries can be submitted directly to the SPARQL endpoint with a GET or POST request to.

GET requests have the query specified in the URL, in the format, e.g..

POST requests can alternatively accept the query in the body of the request, instead of the URL, which allows running larger queries without hitting URL length limits. (Note that the POST body must still include thequery=prefix (that is, it should bequery=(SPARQL_query)rather than just(SPARQL query)), and the SPARQL query must still be URL-escaped.)

The result is returned as XML by default, or as JSON if either the query parameterformat=jsonis included in the URL, or the headerAccept: application/sparql-results+jsonis provided with the request.

The JSON format is standardSPARQL 1.1 Query Results JSON Format.

It is recommended to use GET for smaller queries and POST for larger queries, as POST queries are not cached.

The following output formats are currently supported by the SPARQL endpoint:

Accept: application/sparql-results+xml

XML result format, is returned by default. As specified in

Accept: application/sparql-results+json

Accept: application/x-binary-rdf-results-table

There is a hard query deadline configured which is set to60 seconds. There are also following limits:

Clients exceeding the limits above are throttled with HTTP code429. UseRetry-Afterheaderto see when the request can be repeated. If the client ignores 429 responses and continues to produce requests over the limits, it can be temporarily banned from the service.

Every query will timeout when it takes more time to execute than this configured deadline. You may want tooptimize the queryor report a problematic queryhere.

Also note that currently access to the service is limited to 5 parallel queries per IP. The above limits are subject to change depending on resources and usage patterns.

The data on Wikidata Query Service contains the main namespace,wdq, to which queries to the main SPARQL endpoint are directed, and other auxiliary namespaces, listed below. To query data from different namespace, use endpoint URL

Please see full description onCategories documentation page.

Wikidata Query Service also provides access to category graph of select wikis. The list of covered wikis can be seen here:

The category namespace name iscategories. The SPARQL endpoint for accessing it is

Please seeCategories pagefor detailed documentation.

TheDCAT-APdata for Wikidata is available as SPARQL in namespacedcatap.

The SPARQL endpoint for accessing it is:

We also support querying the database usingTriple Pattern Fragmentsinterface. This allows to cheaply and efficiently browse triple data where one or two components of the triple is known and you need to retrieve all triples that match this template. Seemore information at the Linked Data Fragments site.

The interface can be accessed by the URL:. Example requests:

Note that only full URLs are currently supported for thesubject,predicateandobjectparameters.

By default, HTML interface is displayed, however several data formats are available, defined byAcceptHTTP header.

The data is returned in pages, page size being 100 triples. The pages are numbered starting from 1, and page number is defined bypageparameter.

As the service is open source software, it is also possible to run the service on any users server, by using the instructions provided below.

The hardware recommendations can be found inBlazegraph documentation.

If you plan to run the service against non-Wikidata Wikibase instance, please seefurther instructions.

In order to install the service, it is recommended that you download the full service package as a ZIP file, e.g.from Maven Central, with group IDorg.wikidata.query.rdfand artifact IDservice, or clone the source distribution at build it with mvn package. The package ZIP will be in thedist/targetdirectory underservice-VERSION-dist.zip.

The package contains the Blazegraph server as a .war application, the libraries needed to run the updater service to fetch fresh data from the wikidata site, scripts to make various tasks easier, and theGUIin theguisubdirectory. If you want to use the GUI, you will have to configure your HTTP server to serve it.

By default, only the SPARQL endpoint at configured, and the default Blazegraph GUI is available at Note that in the default configuration, both are accessible only from localhost. You will need to provide external endpoints and an appropriate access control if you intend to access them from outside.

If you want to install an un-released snapshot version (usually this is necessary if released version has a bug which is fixed but new release is not available yet) and do not want to compile your own binaries, you can use either:

deployment repo containing production binaries. Needs

Archiva snapshot deployments at choose the latest version, then Artifacts, and select the latest package for download.

Further install procedure is described in detail in theGetting Started documentwhich is part of the distribution, and involves the following steps:

40 Simple Food Diary Templates Food Log Exaes

Making a lifestyle change can be difficult, which is why its important to track what youre doing and how you feel when changing to a special diet or trying to work with special nutritional needs. The food diary is a universally used tool to help people track their progress. Whether youre trying to lose weight, need to give up gluten, go Paleo, or want to track how much sugar youre taking, a food diary is any easy way to track what youre consuming.

There are several reasons that a food diary can help people lose weight. One thing a food diary does is demonstrate your commitment to the cause; by making a point to write down breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as any grazing behavior when it comes to snacking, youll get an honest picture of your current habits.

The truth is, when we go on a diet, its easy to lie to ourselves or minimize our snacking. Our days are filled with business, and without the structure of a food diary, its easy to get distracted and miscalculate our calories.

However, a food diary has been show to help keep us honest with ourselves. When you write down everything you eat in a day, youll think twice about snacking on a calorie-packed bag of chips or grabbing a fistful of candy at the office party. Thats why its so important to keep a copy of your food diary and take it wherever you go. Think of it as a promise to be honest with yourself. Studies show that people who keep a food diary can lose up to 50% more weight than those who do not.

If youre currently on a diet, or trying to lose weight and gain muscle, you can expand your food diary to include not only your caloric needs but other nutritional needs as well, such as protein, calcium, vegetable servings and more.

Accuracy in this type of food diary is very important. For this reason, you should try to only eat out at restaurants that willingly provide information on calories. Go for smaller portions of high-calorie foods, and try to split appetizers or desserts with several friends.

Many people have food sensitivities or allergies that are hard to pin down. They may find themselves with an allergic reaction seemingly out of nowhere, or they may gradually find themselves with gastric distress with no other symptoms of disease. Sometimes its hard to know which food is causing a reaction in your body. Many allergists and immunologists will ask you to use a food diary template to keep track of you (or your childs) reactions to certain foods.  While getting ready to meet with an Allergy clinic team, it can be helpful to write notes about what symptoms you or your child has after eating certain foods. A certified allergist can find out if are allergic to a certain food or if youre sensitive to it.

A food journal kept for medical reasons is useful in the following ways:

Your doctor team can help identify patterns of cause and effect.

It may help your allergist choose which allergy tests to order.

It can serve as a tool to follow symptom or improvements over a period time.

What types of information should you record in the journal? Youll want to note food consumed, drinks consumed, and any symptoms you experience. Its a good idea to note the intensity of any symptoms. For example, was your stomach violently upset or mildly upset? Did you experience heartburn? Did you get one or more hives? Make a note of time passed from consumption to symptoms. Did you experience the symptom immediately? Or did you experience it 10 minutes later, 20 minutes later, etc.? Did the symptom go away on its own, or did you need to take a medication to ease it?

Aside from writing down what you ate, its important to note the source of the food, especially if you eat a lot of meals away from home. Their websites will often have a list of ingredients used in each meal, but if they dont, you will need to investigate further by calling the restaurant location or even the corporate office. Be aware that many fast food restaurants buy precooked food from another manufacturer. Because of this, however, they usually have a label they can read off to you.

What else is helpful to record in a medical food journal? Usually significant information will include what kind of food you consumed, and how it was cooked. Was it baked? Broiled? Fried? Where di you consume the food? Was this the first time youve eaten it? Dont forget to include drinks, candy, and even bubble gum. If you are allergic to a food dye or preservative, your doctor will need to know about this.

Other useful information to write down for your food diary:

Any medications, supplements, or vitamins you take on a daily basis.

Any emergency room or doctor visits due to allergic symptoms.

Any stressful events around the time of the reaction. (Such as tests, family events, new jobs)

Contact with any common allergens such as pets, latex, pollen, molds, fragrances or pain.

Any seasonal factors, such as cold or hot days.

Using a Food Diary to Plan Weight Loss or Gain

If you need to gain or lose weight, a food journal template can help you get an overview of your current habits so that you can make goals for changes. By tracking the food you eat for a full week straight, youll see how many calories and how much fat youre truly getting in every meal. You may notice that you eat too many carbs every week or give into temptation too often during lunch at work by eating out. By recognizing this behavior, youll be able to plan around your challenges. Instead of eating out for lunch, you can start bringing a bag to work for your meals. Instead of eating bread as your carbs, you may find yourself reaching for some fresh fruits instead.

A food diary can help you make small, meaningful changes to your diet, one day at a time. Aim for realistic goals and youll be able to make significant improvements to your daily diet, one day at a time.

If youre ready to get started, we offer a free food diary template on this page. You can get started tracking your food habits today.

3D generally tends to make charts look complex. But, when data points are fewer, you can enhance the visual appeal of your slides by using 3D. Make sure to include clear data labels to avoid error in interpretation.

Take a look at the following PowerPoint Bubble Chart template for example:

You can right click on the spheres, go to Format shape – 3D Format and play with the material, lighting and shadow of the spheres to suit your needs.

When you use 3D spheres for bubbles, you can try different preset gradient fills to improve the look and feel of your charts. Take a look at this example:

You can remove all unnecessary chart elements to give a minimal look to your charts. Here is an example:

The advantage of the approach is the chart fits in a small space and you get space to write text around the chart. So, the chart is quite useful to be included in a newsletter or internal magazine.

You can even add some interesting elements like silhouettes to improve the visual appeal. Here is an example of bubble chart with vertical orientation and a silhouette:

You can make your PowerPoint bubble chart more insightful by adding trend lines. Take a look at the following chart template:

Your bubbles need not always be circular. Here is a semicircular variation to make the chart look more interesting:

Formatting bubble charts in PowerPoint requires a lot of time and skill. Most busy business presenters prefer to invest time on honing the content, rather than polishing the looks of the chart.

If you want your charts to look attractive but dont want to waste time polishing them, we have an elegant solution for you. We recommend you take a look at our Visual PowerPoint Graphs pack.

The pack has more than 320 ready made Graph templates in PowerPoint. In fact, all the chart templates you saw in this article are taken from the pack.

All you need is to replace sample data with your own data. The pre-formatted templates will take care of the rest. Creating data slides has never been easier and quicker. Here are some more examples from the pack:

I have a couple questions and would really appreciate it if someone could help me out. Im creating a bubble chart in sgplot and have a x,y coordinates and a column for the bubble size. I also have a title column and a column with the colors that I want the bubbles to be.

1. Is there a way to define colors for specific bubbles?

2. Some of the data labels overlap, how do I prevent this from happening so they are readable?

With SAS 9.3, you can assign specific values to the bubbles using the DATTRMAP option in SGPLOT or the DiscreteAttrMap in GTL. Create a Attr Map data set and specify the fill color (and other attributes if you want) for each group value. In the data, set each bubble of same color to same value and use that as the GROUP option. Here is an example:

id=A; value=M; fillcolor=lightblue; textcolor=blue; output;

id=A; value=F; fillcolor=pink; textcolor=red; output;

ods graphics / reset width=4in height=3in imagename=Bubble;

proc sgplot data=sashelp.class dattrmap=attrmap;

bubble x=height y=weight size=age / group=sex attrid=A lineattrs=(color=black);

Bubble labels do not participate in data label collision avoidance. However, you can use scatter overlay with just the data labels to show the labels, which will avoid collision.

ods graphics / reset width=4in height=3in imagename=BubbleLabel;

proc sgplot data=sashelp.class dattrmap=attrmap;

bubble x=height y=weight size=age / group=sex attrid=A lineattrs=(color=black) name=a;

scatter x=height y=weight / group=sex datalabel=name markerattrs=(size=0)

datalabelattrs=(weight=bold) attrid=A;

keylegend a / location=inside position=bottomright;

ods graphics / reset width=4in height=3in imagename=Bubble;

proc sgplot data=sashelp.class dattrmap=attrmap;

bubble x=height y=weight size=age / group=sex attrid=A lineattrs=(color=black);

scatter x=height y=weight / group=sex datalabel=name markerattrs=(size=0)

datalabelattrs=(weight=bold) attrid=A;

keylegend a / location=inside position=bottomright;

I cant seem to get the text colors to change. They are still the default group color scheme. What am I doing wrong? Also, is there a way to specify where the data labels go? I would like them on top of the bubble. Thanks again.

length value $15 fillcolor $8 textcolor $8;

id=A; value=Brand; fillcolor=cx673802; textcolor=cx673802; output;

id=A; value=Product; fillcolor=cxff7200; textcolor=cxff7200; output;

id=A; value=Other; fillcolor=cx92d050; textcolor=cx92d050; output;

ods graphics / reset width=8.36in height=4.58in imagename=BubbleLabel;

proc sgplot data=work.graph_colors dattrmap=attrmap noautolegend;

bubble x=spend y=ef size=amount/ group=color_code attrid=A lineattrs=(color=white);

scatter x=spend y=ef / group=color_code datalabel=color_code markerattrs=(size=0)

datalabelattrs=(weight=bold size=9) attrid=A;

Remove the GROUP option on scatter plot to get default color labels. Set DataLabelAttrs to specify label color.

Remember you are using scatter labels as an alternate for bubble labels for data collision avoidance. You can always go back to bubble labels, and remove the scatterplot entirely to get bubble labels which should be in top right of the bubble.

If you want bubbles in the center of each bubble, you will need to use GTL:

bubbleplot x=height y=weight size=age/ group=sex name=a

datalabel=name datalabelposition=center datalabelattrs=(color=black weight=bold);

proc sgrender data=sashelp.class template=bubble;

Microsoft Word enables you to insert a bubble chart to compare sets of three data series: x values, y values and z (size) values. You can find the Bubble and 3-D Bubble chart templates listed in the X Y (Scatter) group of chart types. A bubble chart template copies to your Word document with a linked Excel worksheet for your data values. The worksheet displays three adjacent columns for these x, y and z values. The plotted bubbles represent the z values of the third data series. The Chart Tools ribbon and the Design and Format tab commands provide style and layout options to make your specific values more meaningful to your clients.

Click in the document where you want to insert the chart, click the Insert tab on the command ribbon, and then click Chart in the Illustrations group to open the Insert Chart dialog box.

Select X Y (Scatter) in the sidebar to open the gallery of thumbnail charts, select the Bubble or 3-D Bubble thumbnail to preview, and then click OK to copy the chart and worksheet template to your document.

Click the worksheets header and drag to the preferred position on your document for the best visibility. Click the chart to bring up the frames sizing handles and then click and drag the handle to change the dimensions.

Edit the worksheet with your data to update the chart. Enter a new value in a cell, and then press Enter or Tab to move the cursor to the next cell and update the linked chart.

Click the chart to bring up the Chart Tools ribbon and the Design and Format tabs. A column of four buttons displays near the charts right side: Layout Options, Chart Elements, Chart Styles and Chart Filters. Select the preferred command to update your bubble charts display. For example, click the Chart Elements button, and then select Data Labels to display the z value for each bubble.

Close the worksheet, if preferred, to display only the document with the inserted bubble chart.

Press Ctrl-S to save your Word document as the preferred file type. For example, DOCX or PDF format.

The bubble chart can help your colleagues understand your financial data. For example, enter your z (size) values for your products market share as a percentage. The bubble size will represent these values.

To remove the chart, click the chart area outside of the plot area, and then press Delete.

To continue with your Word document, click outside the chart. The Chart Tools ribbon and the Design and Format tabs will hide.

The Design tab on the command ribbon is different from the Design tab on the Chart Tools ribbon. Click the Design tab on the command ribbon to change the format of the Word document outside the chart. Click the Design tab on the Chart Tools ribbon to select a style in the Chart Styles group, for example. The Design tab also includes the Chart Layouts group with the Quick Layout command that previews your chart in 11 layouts.

If you closed the worksheet and then want to edit it, right-click the chart, point over Edit Data and then select Edit Data to display the small worksheet, or Edit Data in Excel 2013 to display the full worksheet and the Table Tools ribbon with the Design tab. If you have a large amount of data, select Edit Data in Excel 2013 to access this full worksheet and all the Excel options.
